Our Abortion Care Services

When facing an unplanned pregnancy, patients may choose to continue the pregnancy and parent, continue the pregnancy and consider adoption or foster care, or choose a legal abortion.

If abortion is chosen, it is important to use a safe, legal provider and avoid unsafe backstreet services.

In South Africa, the available abortion method depends largely on gestational age and clinical suitability.

Your Options:

Medical Abortion

Medical abortion is a non-surgical option that uses prescribed medication to end an early pregnancy. It is available up to 9 weeks and uses two medicines: mifepristone, which blocks progesterone, and misoprostol, which causes cramping and bleeding to expel the pregnancy.

Patients are generally assessed through a consultation and ultrasound first, and recovery may include bleeding, cramping and other temporary side effects such as nausea, vomiting, fever, chills or diarrhoea.

What patients should know:

  • It is a non-surgical option
  • It is generally used in early pregnancy, up to 9 weeks
  • It involves two medicines taken within a short time window
  • Bleeding and cramping are expected during the process
  • Most people return to normal activities within a day or two, depending on individual recovery

Telemedicine Abortion

For eligible early pregnancies, telemedicine abortion can offer a more private and convenient option. This involves a remote consultation, after which medication may be collected or delivered discreetly, depending on the clinic’s process and the patient’s eligibility.

The telemedicine model  is available for pregnancies under 9 weeks and includes a telephonic consultation, access to abortion medication, pain medication, aftercare information and follow-up support.

What patients should know:

  • Suitable for eligible pregnancies under 9 weeks
  • Consultation can take place remotely
  • Medication may be collected or delivered discreetly
  • Includes aftercare guidance and support
  • Designed to be private, safe and convenient at home

Surgical Abortion

Surgical abortion is a same-day clinic-based procedure. It is available from 6 to 12 weeks and may be chosen by patients who prefer a quicker in-clinic process, are further along in pregnancy, or have had an unsuccessful medical abortion. It is performed by licensed professionals, and patients may have the procedure with or without conscious sedation.

Aftercare may include monitoring, pelvic examinations where needed, infection awareness and discussion of future contraceptive options.

What patients should know:

  • It is a clinic-based same-day procedure
  • It may be suitable for pregnancies from 6 to 12 weeks
  • Sedation may be available depending on the case and clinic setup
  • Recovery varies, but many patients resume normal activities within a few days
  • It may be preferred when a quicker process is needed

What you Need to know

How We Confirm the Right Option

Before treatment, a consultation is needed to confirm the pregnancy and estimate how far along it is. Pregnancy tests and ultrasound scans are used to confirm pregnancy stage, and a consultation includes medical history and clinical assessment. This helps determine which option is appropriate and safe for the patient.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

A typical appointment begins with a private consultation, a review of your medical history, confirmation of the pregnancy and an assessment of how far along the pregnancy is.

Based on your individual circumstances and the most suitable treatment option, you may either receive medication or be scheduled for a procedure. In some cases, if the pregnancy is further than 12 weeks, the procedure may need to be performed by a doctor.

Important Information for Patients

The most suitable option depends on how far along the pregnancy is and each patient’s individual medical needs. In general, medical abortion is used for early pregnancy, while surgical abortion may be recommended at a later stage or when it is the most appropriate clinical option.

As part of aftercare, we may also discuss contraceptive support to help patients plan forward with confidence. Choosing a safe, legal and professional healthcare provider is an important part of protecting your health and wellbeing.

Aftercare & Support

Aftercare is an important part of the support we provide. Our aftercare services include guidance, pain management, helpful aftercare information and contraceptive counselling where needed.

We also make sure patients understand what to expect after treatment, including normal bleeding and cramping, as well as when to seek medical attention if symptoms become unusual or severe.
